Scooby did!
September 13, 2008 by RS
On September 11th, in Paris, a dog (breed and age undisclosed) managed to create legal history. He ”barked furiously”, according to reports, at the suspected perpetrator of a crime (the killing of Scooby’s owner, a 59 year old lady), leading to what is reported as important evidence in the case.
As the incident occured more than 2 years ago, (believed to be equal to 17 doggy years) it still is to be seen whether this would be considered clinching evidence. Judgement is pending. However, Scooby has now become almost as popular as his cartoon namesake and has created a remarkable precedent for similar situations in the future.
A dog recognises people and other animals more by “sniffing” than any other way. Did you know that a canine can sniff out and identify smells that are 1/1,000,000 lower in concentration than you or I would need to identify the same smell? That is because his olfactory (smelling) receptors, found in the deeper end of the snout, outnumber the receptors a human has.
When a dog “sniffs” he actually breathes deeply and the air he takes in passes over these receptors and the odors get identified. So when a dog sniffs you know he is activating a wonderful mechanism that has made him truly a man’s best friend, in happiness and in need!
